Hunter Killed by Grizzly Bear

Postby House » Sun Sep 18, 2011 7:01 am

Here's a story about a Montana hunter that was killed by a wounded grizzly bear. The hunters had shot the bear thinking it was a black bear and when they entered the brush to find the bear...it attacked

I once traded 1/2 a caribou to a grizzly in exchange for my life. We harvested a caribou in Alaska and a grizzly decided it was the caribou or the hunter. We were able to take 1/2 the meat sacks with us but didn't get to finish cleaning the Boo when the grizz attacked. 600 pounds of Grizz always wins.

Glad I was far luckier than that guy. Being a marathon runner at the time helped as well. I was faster than the 2 guys I was with!

Some friends had a similar experience hunting caribou in the Aleutians. Sucks to lose hard-earned venison, but it's not worth it to lose your life over. I quit taking naps in the middle of the day after a close call with a big black bear on a peak in the North Cascades in the early 90's. I used to love taking off my boots and zonking out in a meadow or on a big rock in the sun. With all the cats and bears around I skip the siesta nowadays and keep on hunting 8-)

I saw a follow-up article to this story. Seems the guy actually died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen. They think that while his partner was shooting the bear, a round passed through the bear and hit him in the stomach killing him. Bad deal all around.

I hadn't about that Dan...thanks for the follow up. Man, what a total nightmare for everyone involved. Feel for the family of the guy that lost his life. Crappy deal!

I'd like to meet this young lady, she must be something very special.

I just got done watching the piece on Letterman about this incredible young lady. I don't stay up late enough to watch it live, but they stream the whole show on thier website. After watching the monolog, I know why I can't stand Letterman and his political views but he did a great job interviewing Erin.

After you posted that story I called Erin and we had her on the Outdoor Line last weekend prior to her appearance on Letterman. What an amazing story and she's do darned down to earth. Thanks for giving me the heads up about it to begin with Dan...much appreciated.

Here's the link to the Letterman segment with Erin and Tonk. It's worth watching!
