Murphy's Sportfishing-Kyuquot Report

Game On!
First trips out of both Kyuquot Locations hit home runs.....

High ocean abundance again proving true......

Literally out of the gate, fishing was great. We have good numbers of every species right now. The big Salmon are just 6 minutes from the lodge and the Halibut are biting in every spot. Also surprising, are the schools of Coho that we are running into. This would be considered very early for Coho and we have already had 20-30 hatchery's (keepers) hit the dock. The Chinook the last couple of days are averaging around the 20 pound mark and the Halibut are the perfect size.

We have had a couple of Tyee's as of the time of writing and a bunch that have been close! We opened the Lodge last Thursday and the ship the next day. All of our guests were thrilled with the numbers of fish.

The best baits the last few days have been Anchovies fished 40 to 80 feet right along the rocks. Halibut have been hanging in the 130 to 190 structure.
The Halibut fishing in Kyuquot is the best on the coast and one of the primary reasons we picked this spot 16 years ago. Sure there are other places that have some good fishing but we seem to always have great fishing. Ucluelet for example has good Halibut fishing but the average size is somewhere in the 10 pound range. There are not too many 10 pound Halibut in Kyuquot.

We also have a lot of variety when it comes to bottom fish. We catch good numbers of Ling Cod and Rock fish on every trip out. The photo on the left is a pretty common picture. This particular Sea Lion had an interesting buffet, he stole a halibut, salmon and a yellow eye rock fish right off the lines! (notice his look..)

To turn fishing dreams into photos that will last a life time we rely on our team of guides that can only be described as the best of the best. All of my guys are long time employees of Murphy's and are all great guys. We all work as a team to make sure that all of our guests get the best fishing available for the short time they spend with us.

I am expecting this year to be the best fishing that we have ever had here in Kyuquot. It is hard to make that statement after the last couple of years of incredible fishing. Indicators say that all this cold water and crappy weather we have been having the last three years, is paying off big time for fish in the ocean. Survival rates are going through the roof for many ocean species..
