PS Shrimp

Slipped out on to Puget Sound for some shrimping. Wow what a bumpy ride!

Set our pots in the Edmonds area in the teeth of building whitecaps. The wind and a big out running tide (a minus low) made setting and pulling the gear a little tricky. However the "fishing" was quite good; the first pull of the first two pots yielded limits for the two of us and we ended up dumping another limit and half in the other two pots.

Now for the best part - prawns sauted in butter and gralic, chef salad, french bread, and a little wine. Of course this time of year a regional feast would not be complete without some hot rhubard pie. Off to the garden to pick the rhubard and getting busy in the kitchen.

Glad to hear you got yours Curt. Nelly and I drove straight to Everett after the show to meet Ray and Kelly Gombiski who had hopped aboard Nelly's boat and launched pots. They picked us up and we made a quick run to see how our first soak did. We had mixed results right off the bat with nice pulls on two pots and then two empty ones. We repositioned the empties, soaked awhile longer and came away with some very nice pulls. One pull had a limit and another was a near limit. All told we got limits of some really big shrimp for everyone on the boat. Great time.

Dinner last night was incredible!
There is nothing like fresh shrimp! After dropping the pots in Nootka last week, I was pleasantly surprised to see the average size of the Puget Sound prawns were as large or larger than their counterparts to the north!

HC shrimp’in was PACKED FULL, of boats that is!
We saw (and had a few of our own) many tangled buoy’s and lines due to the shear number of pots deployed, combined with swift currents and high winds.
1:00 PM sounded the closing bell and that’s when things really got crazy, the mad dash to the boat ramp!
To help control some of the chaos, Twanoh Park Rangers began handing out numbers (like at the DMV) for boat retrievals!
We were fortunate and passed our wait time on buoy, with a bucket of steamers, mussels and oysters hot from the grill at a friend’s beach house.

On our return to the ramp we did see one boat floating belly up around 6:00 PM, where the wait had settled down to just under 1 hr.

We started out slow on the Everett side of Mukilteo. Worked hard for 40 shrimp. Gave up and headed south towards Edmonds. Slow to start then 100-200 a pot after that. Released over 400 shrimp after we took our 3 limits. Water was a little bumpy in the open water, but well worth it to us!
